I dug deep into the family recipe box for this dinner. These are the meatballs I grew up with and they are my favorite. This recipe is not complicated or hard to make. It just takes time. Good ingredients and time. So lets call this one Sunday dinner. Enjoy!
Ingredients
For the meatballs
- 2 pound ground beef
- 1 cup Italian-style bread crumbs
- ½ cup milk
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon pepper
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 Tablespoon olive oil
- 2 egg
For the sauce
- 4 cups pasta sauce, homemade if you have it
- 1 cup diced tomatoes
- 1 teaspoon oregano
- 1 teaspoon basil
- 3-4 cloves garlic
- salt and pepper to taste
Directions
Heat oven to 400°
In a small fry pan, sauté onion in olive oil until cooked.
Spray a roasting pan with cooking spray.
In large bowl, mix the ground beef, eggs, milk, bread crumbs, Worcestershire sauce , salt and pepper. Shape mixture into 12 large meatballs. Place 1-2 inches apart in pan.
Bake uncovered 18 to 22 minutes or until temperature reaches 165°F and no longer pink in center.
Mix the sauce with the chopped tomatoes, oregano, basil, garlic, salt and pepper, Place the cooked meatballs in the sauce and simmer for 2 hours.
Hints
- serve with rolls, Parmesan, and provolone cheese for grinders
- or serve with your favorite pasta (spaghetti)
